Our Living Classrooms: The LPC Ltd Model Plots

Transforming crop production through the power of ecological design.

At Laikipia Permaculture Centre, we move beyond theory to tangible practice with our Model Plots. These are actively managed, small-scale farms designed with a carefully selected mix of companion plants, trees, and animals that work in synergy.

This creates an ideal, self-sustaining ecosystem for growing high-value and staple crops, from drought-resistant grains to indigenous vegetables. The goal is to demonstrate regenerative agriculture in action, providing a practical, inspiring blueprint for local farmers, especially the women’s collectives we partner with.

Why we cultivate model plots:

A Real-World Blueprint

We create a visible, successful example of how to grow specific crops like beans, maize, and leafy greens regeneratively, without relying on chemical inputs. This proves that abundance is possible through working with nature.

Empowering Community Engagement

These plots are our primary tool for engaging farmers. They provide the tangible evidence, practical skills, and inspiration needed for communities to confidently begin their own transition to regenerative practices.

A Site for Continuous Learning

Each plot is a living laboratory. We continuously monitor soil health, water usage, and biodiversity, using the data to refine our techniques and innovate solutions tailored to Laikipia’s unique dryland environment.

Pathways to Scalable Impact

By testing what works, we gain essential insights into viable business models for regenerative farming. This allows us to develop clear pathways for women’s groups and smallholders to scale up their operations and integrate into sustainable supply chains.

A Testament to Harmony

Most importantly, our Model Plots stand as an inspiring example of how ecological health and community commerce can and must work in harmony to build a resilient future for Laikipia.
